Absorb

Several dozen ink drawings accumulated in my studio over the last 10 years or so. Never satisfied with the outcome, these drawings sat dormant in the flat files. While I admired the quality of the black ink – matte and absorbent – I didn’t feel that they were complete. A feeling of being self-absorbed and not able to let go overcame me. So, I tore them up. I rearranged their confused lines on boards painted black. They suddenly awoke from their quiescence and created a gentle vertigo that satisfied me. I call this series “Absorb” to reflect both the quality of the black used (absorbent of both color and heat), and the feeling of being self-absorbed as an artist accumulating things.
